Being a geek

I am a geek. I love spending time surfing blogs and forums, and learning movie trivia off IMDB. I perk up when online conversations include superheroes. I know which X-Men power I want (Jean Grey), which of the “Heroes” I want to be (Hiro), which superhero is THE true superhero (Superman), and what I would do if I had a time machine (go back and stalk everyone). When I’m not surfing or upgrading my blog or planning which movie I’m going to line up for on opening day, I’m in front of the TV watching cartoons or one of my favorite shows (of which there are many). I like doing daily crossword puzzles and sometimes attempt one of those Sudoku things, even if I end up reverse looking up words with Wikipedia and cross-referencing them with Dictionary.com.

Yes yes, I see how I am unproductive and overall lazy. But, there’s a point here.

My TO… he is not a geek. (Comparatively.)

I get sensitive when he calls me geeky as a joke. (Hey, geeks can be sensitive too!) Maybe I'm just a self-conscious geek. Geekette.

… there was a point to this blog when I first started typing it. I have since lost that point.

(I am having fun with the talking in brackets though.)

What does a Galactichero look like? Is that human?

Give me concept designs. I'll check my procrastination schedule. Between getting myspace and playing with Beta... it's difficult.

I would prefer a not human avatar. Bill the galactic hero is human, with two right arms, the left of which is reptilian (from the covers), and tusks which he takes when his commanding officer dies.

Just do ... like a flapping (not necessarily moving, but implying motion) superman cape in black instead of red, white instead of yellow, and a G instead of an S. Or come up with something. I'm not an artist, really.

I wrote a brilliant comment, but my dsl went down and you missed out. High points:
1. I'm not into bugs, I notice things that go unnoticed.
2. There are more bugs alive today than humans have lived in all of history.
3. I don't think a bug is a good idea. What does a bug galactichero look like? Zorak?

The mantle of the Galactichero passed interspecies.

Ridiculous.

Eek I don't think I want to spend my spare time modeling a preying mantis. I'm very not about the bugs.

Kung Fu spider with cape... that is one funky concept.

Do you want to be a puppy, G? I think I can do a puppy. Or would that be too soft for you?

How can you POSSIBLY interact with me and think "now there's a guy who can be represented graphically by a puppy" ?!?!?! Put down the crackpipe already.

A puppy? PUPPY?!?!?!??

That might be slightly OUT OF THE QUESTION!

Nic: you transposed "gh" and "jk." Nyaaaah.

PB: not a joke, not particularly funny. Not particularly earthshattering either.

I was often called the closet geek of my crew. I was the sort of kid who might hide Crime and Punishment under a comic book. My friends were onto me though. They loved me and let me drink their beer anyway.

I did not "fall for it"... I played along.

Why would reading a book make you a geek? I think you miss the actual meaning of the term "geek."

I always preferred the term "freak." A girl in HS called me the "crown prince of dorks and losers" once, and I liked it, so I kept it.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!

oh you're never living that down.

btw, i think he meant geek as in - normal kids = into comics (still kinda geeky), while he was into books.

I also loved books, I think i memorized all of greek mythology books in the library in about 6 months...

I was a sci-fi and fantasy nut. Went through many series of books (but somehow managed not to read any Robert Jordan).

I like to debate parallel vs. serial time travel, and it drives TO nuts because he thinks time travel is impossible. (I think vampires could exist, so it's really pointless to argue "reality" with me.)

For someone with a degree in Science, I'm not very scientific.

I had one person come up to me while I was reading in high school and exclaim, "You read?!?"

I have no idea how to take that. When did reading something I don't have to become a dorky thing to do?

lol, while in biochem we learned of these people with a genetic defect in DNA repair enzymes (i won't get into it, I know it's boring) but they have something called Xenoderma pigmentosa. Basically these people can't go into the sun because it causes their DNA to mutate and bad things happen.

I remember this because I thought of vampires, and made myself a mental note that this could be a reason they never went into the sun... many people with albinism have it

I also believed dragons existed, and i can't WAIT until Eragon comes out. EEEEEEE!!!!

Where's my avatar?

I still collect comic books. PB and I argued about whether Batman or Superman is more of a hero. I play collectible card games with kids. I paint tiny plastic people and play warhammer (and 40k, and starship troopers, and hordes, and warmachine... etc.). I argue with 5 year olds. I get entire scenes of Star Wars stuck in my head. I make fish faces and moo at people. Cherry on top: I had a woman tell me that I have a "comforting dorkiness" last week, completely independent of this post, or my alter ego as Galactichero.
